[about Screen Prints…]
The Beach Boys、The Zombies、Dusty Springfield、Big Star、King Tubbyなどのソフトロック、ノーザン・ソウル、ジャマイカン・ダブなどにインスパイアされた一筋縄ではいかない音楽センスとツイン・リバーブやモーグ・シンセのヴィンテージ・サウンド、そして研ぎすまされた美しいメロディで織りなす名曲の数々は当時ネオアコ~ギター・ポップ・ファンの間でリリースの度に話題となった。

The best kept secret of the UK Manchester Guitar Pop bands, Screen Prints have a selection of their 90’s output collected as a remastered album alongside three unreleased songs : Hum and Hiss.

Screen Prints was formed by Justin Hughes and Declan Meehan in 1997, who were originally from Derby, and Richard Farnell who was recruited from a well known Manchester record shop. Several singles and a compilation were released by labels such as Earworm (UK), Track & Field (UK), Motorway (JAPAN) between the late 90’s – early 00’s.

Screen Prints material from around this time are songs that were all recorded in the living quarters of a hospital in Manchester and were inspired by many sounds such as My Bloody Valentine, The Pastels, Teenage Fanclub, 1970’s Beach Boys, 60’s girl groups and Northern Soul. They created beautiful songs by using elements such as the Moog rogue synthesiser and Fender reverb. They became a hot topic of Neo Acoustic Guitar Pop fans at that time.

Hum And Hiss is a new compilation album which includes three unreleased songs – “Willow Kiss”‘ “Never Look Back Again” and “Cemetery Song”. These songs, as well as the rest of their 90’s material, were originally recorded on a 4-track cassette Portastudio. Declan Meehan of Screen Prints has remastered the songs for this new CD and LP vinyl release.

Having a beautiful break and an impressive and strong guitar and Moog counter melody, ” Willow Kiss” is the best unreleased song of 90’s Manchester.
A balearic guitar and sweet chorus, reminiscent of The Zombies, floats on “Autumnal Playing Fields”.
“Same Time Next Year”, a great mixture of northern soul and guitar pop, was originally released as 7 inch single by the UK Track & Field label.
“Her name I don’t remember” was played twice by the late John Peel on his BBC radio show and has the qualities of Big Star and Mazzy Star – a saddest winter song. Hum and Hiss also includes the heartache guitar rock of “Perfect City”.

We feel this is landmark UK guitar pop from Screen Prints. And it’s best time for us to listen to their lost songs.
