Q1. The Dare はいつ結成されましたか？また、あなたがいらっしゃるロンボク島について教えてください。
The Dareは2017年11月に結成され、すべてが有機的にはじまりました。
リリ（ボーカル）とティミー（現マネージャー）が仕事の休憩中に、何気なくたむろしていたお店の排水溝の前で結成されました。
ティミーがギターをかき鳴らしながらSixpence None The Richerの「Kiss Me」を口ずさんでいると、リリが自然に参加した。ワンヴァースも歌い終わらないうちにティミーは演奏を止めて、こう言った。
「バンドを始めたらどう？メンバーを集めるのを手伝うよ。ガールズバンドはロンボク島にはまだ1つもないと思うよ」
リリは（いつものように）笑うだけだったが、メンバー探しの話を始めると、その申し出は本気になった。
まずはヨラン（ギター）。彼女はすでに音楽活動をしており、Sixteen Plusというポップ・アルト・バンドにベーシストとして参加していたこともある。しかし、The Dareではギターを弾き、彼女は
ギターをプレイすることのほうが好きだった。「最高」って、彼女は言った。
そして一番大変であったこと。それはドラムを叩く女の子を見つけること。ロンボク島のような小さな島では簡単なことではない。しかし、インスタグラムをスクロールしてデシタを見つけた。彼女は隣の島、スンバワのメタルバンドに所属していた。ラッキーなことに、彼女は現在ロンボク島の大学で学んでいた。私たちは彼女に連絡を取り、私たちの音楽ビジョンを共有した。すると彼女は、「やってみよう 」と言ってくれた。
そうしてザ・デアは3人の女の子で始まった： リリ（ヴォーカル／ギター）、ヨラン（ギター）、デシタ（ドラム）。
ティミーはしばらくベースを担当した。私たちは曲を作り始め、やがて「Inthrovvvert」と「Fameinkiss」が誕生したの。
そして2018年の初め、長い探し求めていたベーシストとしてメイガが参加してくれました。彼女を迎えてから、EPを完成させるためにもう1曲「Gum Underdesk」をレコーディングしました。
この瞬間、私たちはフィジカルリリースとライブ活動を始める準備ができたと確信しました。CDはDIYで制作し、アートワークとレイアウトは友人のFiyokaの協力を得て行いました。260gsmのアート紙に印刷しました。CDのプレスは難しくて費用もかかるため、空のCD-Rを使用し、それぞれにステッカーのアートを貼り付けました。
2018年のロンボク島で開催されたレコード・ストア・デイでの初ライブで販売できたのは、本当に素敵な思い出です。
ロンボク島といえば、そう、私たちはマタラム市に住んでいます。ロンボク島はバリ島のすぐ東にある島で、地理的にも文化的にも似ています。美しいビーチや激辛料理など。
ここにはササク族と呼ばれる主要な民族が住んでいます。彼らは伝統と現代生活を美しく融合させています。ちなみに、私たちのバンド名はササク語で「Dedare」、つまり「女の子」という意味の言葉に由来しています。「The Dare」は、この「勇敢な女の子」という言葉を、私たちなりに再解釈するためのものだと考えています。それが、私たちが今も、そしておそらく永遠に持ち続けているビジョンです。
Q2. メンバーの簡単な紹介をお願いします。
はい、私たちはリリ（ボーカル／ギター）、ヨラン（ギター）、メイガ（ベース）、デシータ（ドラム）です。
それぞれ違うバックグラウンドを持っています。
Riri (Vocal/Guitar)
リリは2011年からロンボクの音楽シーンに関わっています。彼女は社交家で、いつも色々な友人関係を飛び回っています。そして、私たちの中で一番お茶目で面白い人です。昔は、ロンボクで毎年音楽ショーを開催するイベントオーガナイザーをしていました。今でもリリとマネージャーのティミーはMataram City Soundでアンダーグラウンド・ライブの企画を手伝っています。
Jollan (Guitar)
ヨランはグラフィックデザイナーです。The Dareのビジュアルの多くは彼女のアイデアから生まれています。今はcreativeの仕事に集中しながら、子育ても頑張っています。ちなみに、私たちの12都市ツアー中、彼女は妊娠中で、それでも来てくれました。私たちは彼女を心から尊敬しています。本当にすごい人です。
Meiga (Bass)
メイガはクリエイティブな仕事からスタートしましたが、今では農場を経営しています。ジュースを栽培し、ブドウを収穫し、すべてを自分で販売しています。彼女は充実した生活を送っています。
Desita (Drums/Vocal)
デシータは国際関係論を学んでいました。面白いエピソードがあります。私たちがインドネシアを1ヶ月かけて巡るツアーを計画していたとき、彼女は公務員として正式に採用されるところでした。しかし、退屈な事務作業とオフィスのデスクワークばかりの9時から5時までの仕事を選ぶ代わりに、彼女は音楽を選びました。
私たちと一緒にツアーをするために仕事を辞めたのです。彼女の勇気ある選択を心から尊敬しています。彼女は現在、The DareとLittle Mascaraという2つのバンドで演奏しています。
彼女は生まれながらのストーリーテラーで、私たちの歌詞のほとんどを書いています。
物語を共有することへの情熱は、彼女がソーシャルメディアにも持ち込んでいるものです。
Q3. ライブはロンボク島だけでなく、ジャカルタや近隣諸国でも行われているのですか？
ええ、本当です。私たちは主にロンボク島以外で演奏しています。
インドネシアの主要都市から遠く離れた場所に住んでいる人なら、旅費の高さとネットワークへのアクセスの制限という苦労をご存知でしょう。だから、ジャカルタのような中心地で演奏する機会をもらったら、その旅に見合うだけの十分なツアーを企画します。
スポンサーなしで自費でツアーを何度か行ってきました。フィジカルリリースやグッズの販売で、費用の大部分を賄うことができました。ロンボク島以外で私たちを支えてくれた人々には本当に感謝しています。
滅多に会えない友人と再会し、夜通し語り合い、故郷では滅多に聞けないような話を分かち合うことほど素晴らしいことはありません。
正直なところ、こうした繋がりが今のThe Dareを形作ってくれました。
Q4. バンドのプロフィールには、「女性を主人公として描き、世間の偏見の裏にある女性の真の姿を描き出すバンドを作る」と書かれています。90年代のライオット・ガールからは影響を受けているのでしょうか？それともインドネシアの政治情勢を反映しているのでしょうか？
その両方が、私たちらしさの大きな部分だと言えるわ。でも、そんな風に計画したことはなくて、私たち自身の女性としての経験から自然にそうなっただけなの。ガールズ・バンドを結成する前に、私たちはすでに女性として何十年も生きてきた。だから、やっとThe Dareのような媒体を手に入れたとき、私たちが経験してきたことすべてを表現するのは自然なことだと感じたの。性差別、差別、固定観念、それに女性であることの喜び。アートってそういうものでしょ？
もちろん、90年代のライオット・グラール・ムーブメントにもインスパイアされた。それが私たちの姿勢とライブ・パフォーマンスのスタイルを形作った。もしかしたら、私たちがライブ中に掲げる横断幕を見たことがあるかもしれない。「コンサートで性的暴行と闘う勇気」、「彼女に選ばせる-彼女にトライさせる-彼女にやらせる」、「従わせるには斬りすぎ」。
これらのメッセージは、観客とのリアルな対話から生まれたものだ。ライブの後はいつも、お客さんとの対話の時間を設けている。お客さんは、悲痛な話や力づけられるような話をしてくれる。
政治に関しては……ああ、心配している。我々は常に虐げられた者の味方だ。沈黙は不正を可能にするからだ。国家による暴力であれ、資本主義による搾取であれ、パレスチナ、シリア、ハイエ、スーダン、ウクライナにおける世界的な人道的危機であれ、私たちは虐げられた人々の側に立つ。人々には基本的人権があります。
1998年の悲劇、民族暴力、レイプ、強制失踪、すべてが解決されていない。ショッキングなことに、2024年、その悲劇に関係する軍人の一人が、現在の大統領になった。私たちはどうして黙っていられるのでしょうか？つい最近、このメッセージを書いている日に、政府の大臣が1998年のレイプと虐殺は 「でっち上げ 」だと言った。私たちはどうして声を上げなかったのでしょうか？
不正義が存在する限り、私たちは歌やステージを通して声を上げ続ける。
Q5. バンドのインスタグラムを見ると、HeavenlyとTeenage Fanclubがお気に入りみたいですね。C86、Tiger Trap、Dolly Mixtureのサウンドも思い浮かびました。一方で、The PiGGiESやKUNG-FU GIRLといった日本のポップパンクのお茶目さも好きだとおっしゃっていましたが。
そう、それは否定できない。K Records、Sarah Records、そしてC86コンピレーションは、私たちのサウンドと精神を深く形作ってくれた。
特にHeavenlyとTiger Trapが大好きで、彼らの精神と倫理観は私たちに多くのインスピレーションを与えてくれた。私たちの曲の1つである「Women Who Sailed The World」は、タイガー・トラップの『Puzzle Pieces』に影響を受けているんだ。タイトルも、Go Sailorの『The Boy Who Sailed Around The World』にインスパイアされたものだ。
それに、私たちの曲の中には日本のパンク・ロックを思い出させるものもあるかもしれない。少年ナイフが大好きだったんだ。それに、私たちは毎週日曜の朝にアニメのオープニング・サウンドトラックを聴いて育ったんだ。例えば、Judy and Maryの『るろうに剣心』の「そばかす」とか、Hysteric Blueの『Ghost at School』の「Grow Up」とかね。
そう、The PiGGIES！私たちは彼らを愛しています。いつか会えるといいな。私たちはメンバーのアスカと連絡を取り合っています。彼らがいつまでも健康で、ロックであり続けますように！
Q6. 『369 Days』についてですが、タイトルの「369 Days」にはどんな意味があるのでしょうか？アルバム全体のレコーディングに369日を費やしたのでしょうか？
このアルバムのレコーディングに369日を費やしたわけではないけど、369という数字には特別な意味があります。強力なスピリチュアル・エネルギー、豊かさ、そして宇宙との神聖な調和をもたらすと信じられている数字なんです。
369日は、より深い自己理解と宇宙とのつながりを目指す、スピリチュアルな旅を反映しています。それが私たちにとっての369日の意味です。
Q7. 『369 Days』はサーフ、ガレージ、インディーポップがミックスされており、Moccaのような純粋なインディーポップと、ジャングリーなパンクソングが共存しています（アップダウン、ハイアンドロー）。「369 Days」はThe Dareのファーストアルバムと言えるでしょうか？「369 Days」の曲やアルバムのコンセプトについて、何かエピソードがあれば教えてください。
これをファーストアルバムと呼んでいただいても、光栄です。
でも、私たちは個人的にはEPと呼んでいます。なぜかって？ 元々はフルアルバムとして構想していたわけではなく、色々な意味で、まだそのタイトルを冠するには少し未熟で未完成な感じがするからです。
『369 Days』は、生と死（「White Sand」、「Days」）、最も身近な人への愛（「Yes Sir!」、「Hello Mama」）、喪失、そして希望を探求する曲の連作です。これらはすべて、このEPの制作中に私たちが経験した現実の出来事、例えば次女（ヨラン）の妊娠と出産から生まれた出来事によって形作られています。
Q8. あなたが共感する現在のインドネシアのバンドをいくつか挙げてもらえますか?
ヨランがちょうど出産したばかりだったので、2年間活動休止していました。
でも、その間にで2つの新しいバンドが誕生しました。デシータはLijle Mascaraというオルタナティブ・ロックバンドを結成し、今ではドラマーではなくフロントウーマンを務めています。リリとティミーはTamarin’sという夢のような新プロジェクトを立ち上げました。
仲間たちが新しいサウンドを探求していく姿を見るのは、本当に嬉しいです。
今、私たちが尊敬しているインドネシアのバンドには、RRAG、Texpack、Swellow、The Cottons、The Jansen、Skandal、Leipzigなどがいます。
Q9. インドネシアで訪れる価値のあるお気に入りの場所を教えてください。
人混みから離れてゆったりとした休暇を過ごしたいなら、ロンボク島がおすすめです。
美しいビーチと雄大な山々が魅力です。
でも、本当の魅力は？それは料理。アヤム・タリワン、サテ・レンビガ、マノック・ルンパク、ペレチン・カンクンをぜひお試しください。うーん、最高に美味しいです。
インドネシアの文化に興味があるなら、ジョグジャカルタやバリ島もおすすめです。
これらの地域からも素晴らしいバンドが輩出されています！
Q10. 日本での初ツアーのスケジュールもすでに決まっていますが、日本で楽しみにしていることはありますか？
バンドとして日本を訪れるのは今回が初めてなので、まずはナオキのところへ駆け寄って、基本的な日本語のフレーズを教えてもらいます（笑）。きっと優しい先生になってくれると思います。
日本の文化に浸り、新しい友達と交流するのが楽しみです。
デシータは以前、夫の美術展に同行して日本を訪れたことがあるので、すでに私たちのために食べ物のリストを作ってくれています。わあ、全部試すのが待ちきれません！
それから、日本のバンドのライブを観るのが待ちきれません。日本の人たちがどんな風に音楽を楽しんでいるのかを体験したいんです。
機会があれば、fastcut recordsに直接足を運び、インドネシアではなかなか手に入らないフィジカルリリースやバンドのグッズを探してみたいです。
Q11. 日本のファンに一言お願いします。
今これを読んでいるということは、fastcut recordsのおかげで『Women Who Sailed The World』と『369 Days』がついに日本で発売されるということです。

“Timmy was strumming a guitar, humming Sixpence None The Richer’s “Kiss Me”, and Riri spontaneously joined in. Before they even finished a verse, Timmy stopped and said, “Your voice is unique! Why don’t you start a band?”

Q1. When The Dare is formed? and please tell me about the Lombok Island where you are.
The Dare was formed in November 2017, everything happened organically. We were born in
front of a shop drain, literally, where Riri (vocals) and Timmy (now our manager) were
casually hanging out during their break at work. Timmy was strumming a guitar, humming
Sixpence None The Richer, and Riri spontaneously joined in. Before they even finished a
verse, Timmy stopped and said, “Your voice is unique! Why don’t you start a band? I’ll help
gather the members.” He added, “Make it an all-girl band—I don’t think Lombok has one
yet.”
Riri just laughed (as she usually does), but that offer became serious later when we started
talking about finding members.
First came Yollan (guitar). She had already been involved in music, once part of a pop-alt
band called Sixteen Plus as a bassist. But with The Dare, she played guitar, and of course, she
prefers guitar. “Cooler” she said.
Then came the hardest part: finding a girl who played drums. That’s not an easy task on a
small island like Lombok. But through some Instagram scrolling, we found Desita, she was in
a metal band from Sumbawa, the island next door. Lucky for us, she was now studying at a
university in Lombok. We reached out and shared our music vision with her, and she said,
“Let’s give it a try.”
So The Dare began with three girls: Riri (vocals/guitar), Yollan (guitar), and Desita (drums).
Timmy filled in on bass for a while. We started wriEng songs, and eventually, Inthrovvvert
and Fameinkiss were born.
Then, early 2018, Meiga joined us on bass ader a long search. To welcome her, we recorded
one more track to complete the EP: Gum Underdesk. That moment marked our readiness to
make a physical release and start playing gigs.
We made DIY CDs artwork and layout were done with help from a friend, Fiyoka. Printed on
260 gsm art paper. Since CD pressing was hard and expensive, we used blank CD-Rs and
pasted sticker art on each one by ourselves.
We sold them at our very first gig during Record Store Day Lombok 2018, a very sweet
memory.
Talk about Lombok, yes we live in Mataram City. Lombok is an island just east of Bali,
Geographically and culturally, it’s kind of similar—beautiful beaches, super spicy food.
There’s one major ethnic group here called the Sasak people. They’ve blended tradition with
modern life beautifully. Fun fact: our band name actually comes from the Sasak word
“Dedare”, which means “girl.” We like to think of The Dare as our way of reimagining that
word “being girls who are brave”. That’s sEll the vision we carry with us today. Honestly,
probably forever.
Q2. Please give us a brief introduction of the members.Drummer Desita also works as an influencer, right?
So yes, we are Riri (vocals/guitar), Yollan (guitar), Meiga (bass), and Desita (drums).
We come from different backgrounds.
Riri (Vocal/Guitar)
Riri has been around the Lombok music scene since
2011. She’s a people person, always hopping through different friend circles. She’s also the
silliest, funniest of us all. Back in the day, she was part of an event organizer that held yearly
music shows in Lombok. Even now, Riri and Timmy help organize underground gigs with
Mataram City Sound.
Yollan (Guitar)
Yollan is a graphic designer. Many of The Dare’s visuals come from her ideas. Right now, she’s
focusing on her creative work while also being a full-time mom. Fun fact: during our 12 city
tour, she was pregnant and still came along with her baby. We deeply admire her. What a
badass.
Meiga (Bass)
Meiga started in creative work, but now she runs a farm. She grows lettuce, harvests grapes,
and sells everything herself. She’s living the good life.
Desita (Drums/Vocal)
Desita studied international relations. Here’s a fun story: when we planned a full-month tour
across Indonesia, she was about to be officially hired as a government employee. But instead
of choosing that 9–5 life with boring paperwork and tiny cubicles, she chose music. She quit
her job to tour with us. Brave choice and we totally respect her for it. She now plays in two
bands: The Dare and Little Mascara. She’s a natural storyteller and writes most of our lyrics.
That love for sharing stories is also what she brings to social media today.
Q3. Are your live performances not limited to Lombok, but also in Jakarta and neighboring countries?
Yes, it’s true, we mostly play outside Lombok.
If you live far from Indonesia’s big cities, you know the struggle: high travel costs and limited
access to networks. So when we get invited to perform in central cities like Jakarta, we plan
full tours to make the trip worth it.
We’ve done several self-funded tours (no sponsor). Selling physical releases and merch
actually helped cover most of the costs. We’re so grateful to the people outside Lombok
who supported us along the way.
There’s nothing better than reuniting with friends we rarely see, talking all night, and sharing
stories we rarely hear back home.
Honestly, those connections helped shape The Dare into who we are now.
Q4. The band’s profile states, “To make a band that is projecting women as main characters and is describing the real image of women behind public prejudice.” Are you influenced by 90s Riot Grrrl? or is it a reflection of the Indonesian political situation?
We’d say it’s both are a big part of who we are. But we never planned it that way, it just
came naturally from our own experiences as women. Before forming an all-girl band, we had
already lived decades as women. So when we finally had a medium like The Dare, it only felt
natural to express everything we’ve been through: sexism, discrimination, stereotypes, but
also the joy of being women. So, That’s what art is for, right?
Of course, we were also inspired by the 90s Riot Grrrl movement. It shaped our attitude and
live performance style. Maybe you’ve seen the banners we raise during shows:
“Dare to fight sexual assault in concert,”
“Let her choose – let her try – let her do,”
“Too slay to obey.”
Those messages come from real conversations with our audience. After gigs, we always
make Eme to talk, and people share their stories—some heartbreaking, some empowering.
These banners are their voices, amplified on stage.
As for politics…. yeah, we’re concerned. We always side with the oppressed. We refuse
neutrality, because silence enables injustice. Whether it’s state violence, capitalist
exploitation, or global humanitarian crises in Palestine, Syria, Haiti, Sudan, Ukraine, we stand
with the oppressed. People deserve basic human rights.
And then hmmm, Indonesia has its own dark past: the 1998 tragedy, ethnic violence, rape,
and forced disappearances, sEll hasn’t been resolved. Shockingly, in 2024, one of the military
figures linked to that tragedy became our president now. How can we stay silent? Just
recently, on the day we write this message, a government minister said the 1998 rapes and
massacres were “made up.” How could we not speak up?
As long as injustice exists, we will keep speaking out through our songs and our stage.
Q5. Looking at the band’s Instagram, it seems Heavenly and Teenage Fanclub are your favorites. I also thought of the sounds of C86, Tiger Trap, and Dolly Mixture. On the other hand, there’s also the mischievousness of Japanese pop punk, like the PiGGIES and KUNG-FU GIRL, which you also mentioned as your favorites.
Yes, we can’t deny it. K Records, Sarah Records, and the C86 compilaEon deeply shaped our
sound and spirit.
We especially love Heavenly and Tiger Trap, their spirit and ethics inspired us so much. One
of our songs, Women Who Sailed The World, was influenced by Tiger Trap’s Puzzle Pieces.
Even the title was inspired by Go Sailor’s The Boy Who Sailed Around The World.
And yeah, some of our songs might remind you of Japanese punk rock. We used to love
Shonen Knife. Plus, we grew up with anime opening soundtrack every Sunday morning—like
Rurouni Kenshin’s “Sobakasu” by Judy and Mary, or Ghost at School’s “Grow Up” by Hysteric
Blue.
And yes, The PiGGiES! We adore them. We hope we can meet them someday. We’re still in
touch with Asuka—may they always stay healthy and keep rocking!
Q6. about “369 days”, Is there any meaning to the title 369 days? you spent 369 days for recording whole album?
No, we didn’t spend 369 days recording this album, but the number 369 holds a special
meaning for us. It’s a number believed to carry powerful spiritual energy, abundance, and
divine alignment with the cosmos.
369 Days reflects a journey, a spiritual one, toward deeper self-understanding and
connection with the universe. That’s 369 Days means for us.
Q7. The album is a mix of surf, garage and indie pop, with pure indie pop like Mocca and jangly punk songs coexisting (Ups and downs, high and low). Can we call “369 Days” The Dare’s first album?If you have any stories about songs in 369 days or album concept, please tell us about them?
You can call it our first album, and we’d be flattered! But we personally refer to it as an EP.
Why? Because it wasn’t originally conceived as a full album project, and in many ways, it sEll
feels a bit too raw and imperfect to wear that title just yet.
369 Days is a cycle of songs exploring life and death (White Sand, Days), love for those
closest to us (Yes Sir!, Hello Mama), loss, and hope. All shaped by real-life moments we
experienced during the making of this EP, including the pregnancy and birth of our second
daughter (Yollan’s)
Q8. Can you name some current Indonesian bands that you identify with?
We were inactive for two years because Yollan had just given birth.
But in that time, two new bands emerged. Desita started an alt-rock band called Lijle
Mascara, where she’s now the front woman instead of the drummer. Riri and Timmy
launched a dreamy new project called Tamarine’s.
We love seeing our friends explore new sounds.
Some Indonesian bands we admire right now include RRAG, Texpack, Swellow, The Cottons,
The Jansen, Skandal, and Leipzig.
Q9. Can you name favorite places in Indonesia, worth visiting?
If you’re looking for a chill vacaEon far from the crowds, Lombok is the place.
We’ve got beautiful beaches and majestic mountains. But the real star? The food. Try Ayam
Taliwang, Sate Rembiga, Manok Rumpak, and Pelecing Kangkung, hmmm so good.
If you’re curious about Indonesia’s culture, you might also enjoy Yogyakarta or Bali. Amazing
bands are coming out of those regions too!
Q10. The first tour schedule in Japan has already been fixed. Is there anything you’re looking forward to in Japan?
This will be our first time visiting Japan as a band, and the first thing we’ll do is run to Naoki
and beg him to teach us some basic Japanese phrases, hahaha. We just know he’s going to
be a kind sensei.
We’re excited to immerse ourselves in Japanese culture and connect with new friends.
Desita has actually visited Japan before, she accompanied her husband for his art exhibition,
so she’s already made a food list for us. OMG, we can’t wait to try them all!
Also, we’re dying to see Japanese bands live. We want to experience how people in Japan
enjoy music.
And if we get the chance, we’d love to visit Fastcut Records in person, to look for physical
releases and band merch that are hard to find in Indonesia.
Q11. Please tell a word to Japanese fans.
If you’re reading this now, it means Women Who Sailed The World and 369 Days are finally
