– いつ、どのようにしてStarry Eyed Cadetは結成されましたか？みんなサンフランシスコの地元の友達だったのかな。
私たちはみんなStarry Eyed Cadetを始める前から友達でした。どこかで一緒にバンドをやっていたり、一緒の職場で働いてたり。そして、2013年の夏にStarry Eyed Cadetを結成しました。RobとRexは当時Marine Lifeのメンバーだったけど、ある日、GilとSallyとの偶然のセッションで新しい曲のアイデアが閃いたの。
そこで私たちはバンドを結成して、このバンドでは誰もが自由に作曲していいことにしたの。最後に、バンドを完成させるために、Rexは昔のバンドメンバーのRonに声を掛けました。彼はブラジリアン・ボッサ～サンバ・バンドのメンバーで、またインディーポップを演奏出来ることを喜んでくれたわ。
― メンバーの自己紹介をお願いします。
みなさん、こんにちは。私たちはサンフランシスコのStarry Eyed Cadetです。えっと、Robはドラマーで、Ronはギターや他の弦楽器の担当。Rexはベーシストで、Gilはキーボディストなの。
そして、Sallyはメンバーで唯一3文字の名前じゃなくて、ボーカルとギターと、たまにパーカッションを演奏します。
実は全員がボーカリストなんだけど、Ronはどうしても必要なパートだけ歌うの。あとはカラオケに行った時とかね。
― メンバー5人全員がソングライティングを手掛けていると聞きましたが、それぞれのメンバーはStarry Eyed Cadetを結成する以前にもバンドやソロ活動をしていましたか？
メンバーはみんなこれまでにも一緒に音楽活動をしていたの。RobとRexはMarine Lifeのメンバーだったし、その前にも他のバンドで一緒に演奏してた。RobとGilはParting Glanceの元メンバーで、RexとRonは（すぐ解散しちゃったけど）サイケロック・バンドもやってたわ。でもSallyにとってはStarry Eyed Cadetが最初のバンドよ。
– 普段はどこでどのように練習をしていますか。また作曲方法について教えてください。
私たちはいつもRobの家で練習するの。彼の家は1階が機能的な音楽スタジオになっていて、Robは”Cloud 8 Studio”って名付けてるわ。メンバーみんな仕事で忙しかったりスケジュールが合わないから、一緒に集まるのが難しいこともあるけど、最低でも週に1回は集まれるようにしてるわ。・・・嘘、2週間に1回くらいかな。
曲作りに関しては、曲によって違うの。曲によっては未完成のままスタジオで合わせるかな。何時間もブレイン・ストーミングしてアイデアを出すのに時間を掛けて、歌詞やアレンジを思いつくの。心の中で大切にしている個人的な体験やエピソードを描き出そうとしてね。シンプルなアイデアや複雑なアイデアを組み合わせながら好きな曲を作っていると、最後にはみんなで一緒に演奏して楽しみたくなるの。上手くいけば、繰り返し聴きたくなるようなキャッチーで中毒性のある曲が仕上がるわ。それに、私たちは食べることが大好きで、練習が終わった後にみんなで夜ご飯を食べることを楽しみにしているの。
練習だけじゃなくて、レコーディングも”Cloud 8 Studio”でしているのよ。実はレコーディング中に作曲することもあるの。ときどき、楽器の周りでああでもないこうでもないって大騒ぎすることもあるけど、最後には自分たちのサウンドを気に入って、録音することに決めるの。
– Starry Eyed Cadetの音楽には沢山の魅力が詰まっています。例えば90年代のシューゲイザーを連想するような美しいフィードバックや、The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart、Camera Obscuraのようなポップなメロディ、80sネオアコバンドのような瑞々しさ、60’sガールズ・ポップのようなコーラスワークなどが連想されます。あなた達がインスパイアされたアーティストはいますか？
尊敬しているバンドはたくさんいて、全部を挙げるのはきっと無理だと思う。でも、いくつか名前を挙げるとしたら、The Smithsのとてもユニークな比喩を使った歌詞と普通じゃないサウンドを組み合わせたソングライティングには憧れているわ。もう一つにはBlonde Redheadのメランコリックな曲にも。それにStars、Grizzly Bear、Ride、The Jesus and Mary Chain、The Stone Roses、Velocity Girl、Cardigans、Eggstone・・・もちろんThe BeatlesとThe Beach Boysもね。ミュージカルやサウンドトラック、それと昔のMTVの番組「120 Minutes」に出てたバンド達にも影響を受けているわ。私たちは美しいメロディやハーモニー、風変わりな曲を書くようなバンドやミュージシャンが大好きなの。
― アルバムのタイトル「Places We Don’t Belong」に込められたメッセージや、今回のアルバムのコンセプトはありますか？
このタイトルはアルバムの中のある曲から取ったの。きっとどの曲からか予想がつくと思うけど、「On The Run」からね。このタイトルを少しだけ哲学的に響かせようとするなら、日常生活における私たちの意見のようなものなの。ときどき、私たちは個人の責任を強く問われることがあって、そんな時、ここには居たくないって思うの。でもメンバーと一緒に演奏している時には、在るべき場所に居るって感じる。私たちは音楽を演奏することに癒しを求めているし、私たちの音楽が他のみんなを癒すことが出来たらいいなって思ってるの。
― バンドを始めてからこれまでの経緯を教えてください。
私たちは沢山の曲を書いて自分たちのサウンドを理解するのに１年を費やしたわ。そして2014年の夏に、ライブオファーを貰うためのプロモ用に「On The Run」のデモを録音することに決めたの。信じられないことに、この曲はCloudberry Recordsの元に辿り着いて、それから彼がNYC POPFESTのオーガナイザーのMazに中継してくれたの。こうして、私たちはNYC POPFEST 2015の出演オファーを貰うことができました。
それから2、3ヶ月は、NYC POPFESTまでにもっと沢山の曲を録音して完成させる事を目標に作業していたわ。2015年の2月に、私たちはデビューEPを完成させることが出来た。この時は幸運にもシンガポールのPleasantryの元にこのEPが届いたの。彼らは私たちを北アメリカツアーのサンフランシスコ公演に誘ってくれて、スプリットEPも一緒にリリースしたわ。
そのすぐ後にNYC POPFESTが開催されて、私たちはたくさんの素晴らしいバンド達と出会うことが出来ました。もちろん、Wallflowerともね！それからはこのアルバムを制作するために時間を掛けているわ。Fastcut Recordsがレーベルに迎え入れることに興味を持ってくれたのはとても幸運だったって思ってる。私たちはずっとFastcutの沢山のアーティストたちのファンだったから。
― 2015年の5月にあなた達はNYC POPFESTに出演しました。僕たちが出会ったのもNYC POPFESTでしたよね。NYC POPFESTはどうでしたか？
あの場所に居れた事を本当に感謝しているわ。沢山の素晴らしいバンドの演奏を見たり知り合えた事は素晴らしかったし、幾つかのバンドにはとても大きな影響も受けました。あんな体験が出来て本当に恵まれているって感じるわ。Gilは前からWallflowerの事を知っていて、私たちにも話を聞かせてくれてた。だからWallflowerと出会えていっそう興奮したし、あなた達のライブを観れたことは私たちのツアーのハイライトの一つだったわ。別々の地域や世界中の国々、さらには様々な世代の沢山の人々と出会えたこと、一緒に演奏して音楽を楽しめたことは素晴らしい気分だった。
― サンフランシスコには過去にはThe Aisler’s Set、最近ではPapercutsやThe Bilinda Butchersのようなインディーポップ・バンドがいます。それに、近年ではSF Popfestも開かれていますよね。サンフランシスコの音楽シーンやおすすめのバンドがいたら是非教えてください。
近年では、残念なことにサンフランシスコのインディーシーンは少し衰退しつつあるの。なぜなら物価や生活に掛かるコストが高騰して、多くのアーティストが引っ越すことを余儀なくされてしまっているから。それに多くのライブハウスが閉店せざるを得なくなってる。新しいマンションがどんどん増えて、騒音苦情が寄せられるせいでね。でもこの街に住んでいる私たちミュージシャンの多くは今でも音楽を愛していて、地域の音楽シーンに携わって活動しようとしているわ。ライブをしたり、ライブを観に行ったりしてね。The Makeout RoomやSlim’s、Hotel Utah、B rick and Mortar、The Hemlock and The Knockoutのようなライブハウスは今でもインディーバンドをサポートし続けてる。オークランドのような近くの街では今でも音楽シーンが盛り上がっていて、私たちも良く通っているわ。
地元のバンドについては、たくさんの素晴らしいバンドがいるわ。少し挙げるなら、Sandy’s、Acid Ghost、Lunchbox、Cruel Summer、Yea-Ming and the Rumours、Largesse、The Corner Laughers、Apple Orchard、Scrabbel、The Orange Peels、Avaleya and the Glitterhawksなんかは大好きよ。
― サンフランシスコにはゴールデンゲートブリッジやユニオン・スクエアのような名所やベイエリアの美しい景観の印象がありますが、お気に入りの場所やショップはありますか？またサンフランシスコのカルチャーや景観に音楽的なインスピレーションを受けることはありますか。
うーん、私たちはそんなにショッピングに熱狂的じゃないの。（なぜなら高すぎるから！）・・・でも面白いものを探したいなら、ミッション地区にはリーズナブルな小さいお店が幾つかある。たぶん、私たちは食べ物屋さんの方が沢山教えられると思うわ。たとえばシンプルで美味しいメキシカン・フードならLa Taqueriaとか。新鮮なシーフードならOyster Swan Depot、デザートならTartine、ピザならTony’sね。フードについてもっと知りたかったら教えてね！
それに、サンフランシスコには気候の異なる地域が沢山あります。この町の美しさはそんな多様性にあって、誰にとってもぴったりの場所が見つかると思うわ。
Robはエンバーカデロの海岸線を散歩するのが大好きよ。そこには農家の市場のような地元の魅力と観光者を引きつけるような名所の両方があるの。Ronはサンフランシスコ近代美術館を強くオススメしているわ。3年間の拡大工事の後、やっと先月リニューアル・オープンしたの。Sallyのお気に入りの場所はゴールデンゲートパークの中のカリフォルニア科学アカデミー。ミュージアムと水族館、プラネタリウムの複合施設なの。夏には、この公園でコンサートや音楽フェスが開かれるわ。もしあなたが郊外を冒険したいなら、ハーフムーン・ベイは美しい砂浜よ。特に暑い日にはね。
いずれにせよ、直接的ではないにしても、ベイエリアでの生活は私たちの音楽に影響を与えているわ。たとえば「Happy Place」という曲は、いつも遊びに行くサンフランシスコの友達の家と、遊んでいる時の笑い声にインスパイアされて書いた曲なの。
― 日本にはどのようなイメージがありますか？来日したらやってみたいことを教えてください。
日本について考えると、フレンドリーで親切な人々や、清潔な街並み、新しい発明やテクノロジー、それにとても美味しそうなフードが思いつくわ。
Ronは大学時代に日本語を勉強していて、近畿大学に少し留学していたこともあったの。それに彼は日本のインディーポップの大ファンなの。タワーレコード渋谷店のJ-Indiesのコーナーは今でも彼のお気に入りの場所の一つよ。彼は出張で上海に行く時には、可能なら途中で東京に寄って、日本の音楽CDを買ったり下手な日本語を練習することが好きみたい。大阪や関西にもまた近々行けたらいいなって言ってる。
Sallyは13年前に日本に行ったことがあって、大阪の水族館に行ったり、ゲームセンターで遊んだり、可愛い文房具を集めたりして、とても楽しい時間を過ごしたの。
Rexもまた京都や奈良、それに信州の渋温泉と東京に行ったことがあるの。京都や奈良の美しい寺院や穏やかな雰囲気を楽しんだわ。それに他のメンバー同様に、彼もいつか日本でライブをしたいって思ってる。
Robはトランジットで一瞬東京に寄ったことがあるだけだけど、彼は日本の文化や音楽、フード、ファッション、おもちゃ、そして美しい景観の大ファンだからいつも日本に行きたいって思ってるわ。
私たちはみんな日本を訪れたいと思ってるし、地方に滞在したり、日本の音楽シーンを体験したり、長い列に並んで有名店のラーメンを食べたり、温泉に入ったり、築地の市場に行ったり、それにもちろんFastcut Recordsにも遊びに行きたいな！
― 最後に、日本のファンやリスナーに一言お願いします。
Fastcut Recordsから私たちのアルバムをリリース出来てとても嬉しいです。皆さんが私たちの新しいアルバムを気に入ってくれて、近い将来に日本でもライブが出来ることを祈っています。たくさんの友達を作ったり、勉強したり、日本の音楽シーンを体験することを楽しみにしています。ナオキ、マサミ、今回は本当にありがとう。

-When did you start Starry Eyed Cadet? Had you guys already been friends in San Francisco before you started the band?
We were already friends before Starry Eyed Cadet. At some point or another, some of us were either in a band together or worked in a company together. Starry Eyed Cadet started in the beginning of summer 2013. Rob and Rex were currently playing in Marine Life, but an accidental jam session with Gil and Sally sparked new song ideas. They decided to form a band, where everyone in it was encouraged to compose. To make the band complete, Rex contacted former bandmate Ron, who was playing in Brazilian Bossa/Samba bands, and he was very excited to play indie-pop music again.
-Could you introduce yourselves?
Hello, everybody! We are Starry Eyed Cadet from San Francisco. Well, Rob is the drummer, Ron plays guitars and several other strummed instruments, Rex does the bass, and Gil is the keyboard whisperer. And Sally is the only one who doesn’t have a three-letter first name, she also sings and plays guitar and sometimes some percussions. Actually, everyone sings, but Ron only sings when required. And at karaoke.
-I amazed to hear that all you guys can write and compose songs! Had each of you guys been a member of other bands or done solo works before you started the band?
All of the guys have played with each other previously. Rob and Rex are in Marine Life and had been in other bands together. Rob and Gil played in Parting Glance, and Rex and Ron played in a short-lived psychedelic rock band. But this is Sally’s first band!
-Where/How do you have your band practice? Also, please let me know how to create your songs.
We practice at Rob’s house, where the first floor has been converted into a functioning studio, which Rob named Cloud 8 Studio. Since everybody has busy day jobs and different schedules, sometimes it’s difficult to get together, but we try to play at least once a week. Ok, once every two weeks.
As for the songs, they come together differently. Some songs come to practice unfinished; we would spend many hours brainstorming and coming up with lyrics and arrangements. We draw from personal experience, or stories that we hold dear to our hearts. There is a mix of simple and complex ideas, and in the end we just want to play together and have fun, while creating music we love. Hopefully, our work is compelling and catchy enough to make you want to listen again. And all of us love to eat, so late night food options in the area is one of the things we look forward to at the end of practice.
Besides practice, we also record in Cloud 8 Studio. There have been songs that we actually compose while we record. Sometimes, by accident, we would be fooling around playing instruments, and we would end up really liking the sound and decide to record it.
-Your music is full of charms like beautiful feedback noises of 90’s shoegaze bands, pop melodies like The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart or Camera Obscura, freshness of 80’s indie pop bands, sweet chorus works like 60’s girl groups, etc… Could you explain the bands which you guys were inspired by?
There are so many bands we look up to, it’s probably impossible to list them all! But to name a few, we adore how The Smiths write their songs, the very unique metaphors in their lyrics and the unusual sounds they incorporate. Blonde Redhead is another, for their melancholic tunes. Stars, Grizzly Bear, Ride, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Stone Roses, Velocity Girl, Cardigans, Eggstone… oh and of course The Beatles and The Beach Boys. We’re also inspired by musicals, soundtracks, and the bands from the old MTV weekly show ‘120 Minutes’. We love bands and music with beautiful melodies, harmonics, and a whimsical nature in their songs.
-Are there any messages behind the title “Places We Don’t Belong” or any concepts of this album?
The title is taken from one of the songs, you can probably guess which one (Ok, it’s from ‘On the Run’). If we were going to try to sound a little philosophical, it’s kind of our take on everyday life; that our individual responsibilities can be straining sometimes and make us feel we don’t belong, but we feel at the right place when we play music together. We seek comfort in playing music and hope our music could also be comforting to others.
-Could you tell me the story of your band so far?
We spent about a year just writing a bunch of songs and trying to figure out our sound. In the summer of 2014, we decided to record a demo of ‘On the Run’ to use as a promo to get gigs. Miraculously, it found its way to Roque of Cloudberry Records, who then relayed the song to NYC Popfest Organizer Maz, and we got invited to play at NYC Popfest 2015!
For the next few months, we were working towards our goal to record and finish more songs before NYC Popfest. In February 2015, we completed and released our debut EP. This time we were fortunate that our EP reached the band Pleasantry from Singapore. They invited us to open for them on their North American tour in San Francisco, as well as share a split EP release.
Popfest followed soon after, where we saw and met many great bands including, of course, Wallflower! We spent the time since then playing and working on this album. We feel very fortunate that Fastcut Records was interested in having us under their label, we have been a fan of many Fastcut artists!
-You guys played in NYC POPFEST 2015, and there we met for the first time! How was NYC POPFEST?
We were really grateful to be there. It was wonderful to watch and meet so many great bands, some of which were big influences to us. We definitely felt blessed with such an experience. Gil had already known and told us all about Wallflower, so we were even more excited to meet you, and seeing you play live was one of the highlights of our trip. It was a great feeling to see so many people from different paths, from across the world and even from different generations, to come together, to play and enjoy music.
In addition to the great music, we also spent a lot of time looking for yummy food in NYC. The burgers at Shake Shack were worth the wait!
-In San Francisco, there are some indie pop bands like The Aisler’s Set, Papercuts and The Bilinda Butchers. Also, SF POPFEST held in recent years. Could you let me know a little about music scene in SF and introduce me some local bands which you guys recommended for?
Through recent years, the San Francisco indie music scene has unfortunately faded a bit due to the growing high cost of living which forced many artists to move out. Many local music venues have also had to close its doors due to noise ordinances imposed because of the rise in new apartment complexes being built. However, many of us in the city still do love music and we try to remain involved and active in supporting the local music scene, either by performing or merely attending the shows. The Makeout Room, Slim’s, Hotel Utah, B rick and Mortar, The Hemlock and The Knockout are among the places that still support indie artists. Neighboring cities such as Oakland have flourishing music scenes at the moment, which we find ourselves frequenting as well.
As for local bands, there are lots of great ones. W e’re a fan of Sandy’s, Acid Ghost, Lunchbox, Cruel Summer, Yea-Ming and the Rumours, Largesse, The Corner Laughers, Apple Orchard, Scrabbel, The Orange Peels, and Avaleya and the Glitterhawks just to name a few.
-There are so many sightseeing spots like Golden Gate Bridge, Union Square and beautiful scenery of bay area in San Francisco. Do you have any favorite places or shops in San Francisco? Have your music have been inspired by the scenery, culture or something of SF?
Hmm we’re not too big on shopping (it’s expensive!)… But there are lots of little thrift stores in the Mission area if you’re looking for something unique. I guess we can tell you more about good places to eat, like La Taqueria for simple and delicious Mexican food, fresh seafood at Oyster Swan Depot, delightful desserts at Tartine, or pizza at Tony’s. Ping us if you want to know more about the food!
San Francisco has so many different areas, with different weather patterns. The beauty of this city is in its diversity, there’s something for everyone depending on what you’re looking for.
Rob loves to hang out by the water in the Embarcadero, where there’s a mix of the local charm of the farmer’s market and the famous sights that draw the tourists. Ron highly recommends SFMOMA which just re-opened last month after 3 years construction to expand! Sally’s favorite place is the Academy of Science in Golden Gate Park, which is a one-stop museum, aquarium, and planetarium. In the summer, the park holds concerts and music festivals. If you want to venture a bit out of the city, Half Moon Bay has a beautiful beach, especially on a warm day.
One way or another, sometimes indirectly, our songs are inspired by our lives in the Bay Area. The song ‘Happy Place’ is inspired by our friends’ ever-welcoming house in San Francisco and the laughter we share whenever we hang out.
-What kind of image do you have about Japan? If you come to Japan in the future, is there anything you want to try?
When we think of Japan, we think of friendly and helpful people, very clean environment, new inventions and technology, delicious food that looks too good to eat…
Ron studied some Japanese in college and spent a little time at Kinki University, and is a big fan of Japanese indie-pop. The J-Indie section at Shibuya Tower Records is still one of his favorite locations. He likes to stop in Tokyo when possible on his way to Shanghai for business travel, and try to catch some music and practice his bad Japanese. But he’d like to visit Osaka and Kansai again soon.
Sally visited Japan about 13 years ago, she was having a blast being in awe at Osaka Aquarium, playing at game centers, and collecting pretty stationaries.
Rex has also been to Kyoto and Nara and Shibu-onsen, and Tokyo. Out of all these places, he enjoys visiting Kyoto and Nara for their beautiful temples and less hectic atmosphere. And like everyone in the band, he wishes to someday be able to perform in Japan!
Rob has only stopped in Tokyo for a short layover but has always wanted to visit Japan as he is a huge fan of the culture, music, food, fashion, toys, and overall beauty of the country.
But anyway, we all would love to visit Japan and live like the locals, experience the music scene, wait the long queue and eat authentic ramen, go to hot springs, visit Tsukiji fish market… And of course, we want to visit Fastcut Records!
-Thank you for taking your time to interview with us! Last, could you give a message to your fans in Japan?
We are very excited that Fastcut Records is releasing our music in Japan. We hope they all enjoy the new record and that we can play in Japan in the near future.
